Kinky Twists: My 2nd Attempt (23.09.11)

"After reaching the decision to reinstall my kinky twists I set about the monumental task of doing so!"

As I had washed my hair on 21.07.11 I decided that I didn't need to rewash my hair before installing the twists.

This time I used Model Model Marley Braid in colour 4.  I purchased 3 x packs and used installed the twists using the full length of the marley braid, without cutting.  I split each section of the extension hair as I also did last time.  Whilst installing the twists, I made sure that I fully detangled each section of my hair using either coconut oil or Just For Me Conditioning Detangler before adding moisturiser and adding more coconut oil to seal.  I installed the braids using the two strand technique as I did before.  I used the three strand method on any areas of short hair in order to obtain a better grip.

I really like the Model Model Marley Braid as it felt silkier than the hair I used before and was also easier to split the hair, however it is thinner and the pack only contains 19 braids which is 11 less than the hair I used before.  This meant that I had to make a halfway through braiding dash to the shops to buy some more hair.  they didn't have anymore Model Model hair so I just got one pack of the hair I used during my first attempt.

In addition to changing the length, brand of hair, length and colour, I also picked up a useful tip on YouTube which stops the hair twisting at the root of my own hair when twisting down the length of the extension hair.  The trick is once I'd finished attaching the extension hair with a braid, I attached a metal sectioning clip to just above the braided section then started to twist.  The sectionining clip prevented the twist from twisting on itself therefore meaning less stress on my own hair.

These are the sectioning clips that I used to secure each braid as I twisted

I'd like to say that I totally love these twists, however the reason for the delay in posting this is due to the fact that I really don't like these twists at all!  They were way too long when I installed them so I had no choice but to cut them on 29.09.11, just under a week after installing them.  I was hesitant to cut them as I DO NOT LIKE kinky twists with blunt ends.  Unfortunately I had no choice as they were just unmanageable and uncomfortable to sleep in so I cut them from about MBL / WL in the back to about BSL.  The length is better but I really am not feeling them and think about taking them out EVERY-SINGLE-DAY but I'll be damned if I am going to let those three days of install go to waste!

With that said, the plan (at the moment) for this hair is to leave it in for 4 weeks.  I will take it out on 21st October, deep condition overnight if possible and then either reinstall another set of kinky twists straight away or get a wig!  I really miss my fringe and my poker straight hair too.  I am in withdrawl after almost a year and a half of limited heat and mainly protective styling.  I want hair with swang that causes no damage to my own hair in the process....

Me and my clips ins when I used to have a fringe - that I loved!!!

This is probably why I'm currently loving Kelly Rowlands hair on this season of UK X Factor so I will probably try to find a similar wig with a fringe that is made using remy hair and with a medium heavy fringe that can be worn in the front or side swept.  My boyfriend said he will buy one for me so here's hoping he sticks to his offer.  Any suggests of a style please feel free to send them to me (",)

  2. Hi

    Thanks for commenting!

In the town where I live there are only about 4 or 5 (but I think it's more like 4!) BSS shops which sell hair and products. So not the place for a PJ to live. Anyway, I ususally frequent those shops for my hair. I don't often buy hair online unless I have used it before, seen/touched it or had it recommended to me. For me hair purchasing has been pretty much hit or miss. I have used many different types over the years.

I made my clip-ins myself. I used decent quality hair from my local BSS, which exactly matched my hair in texture and colour. I then measured the wefts against where they would be positioned on my head, cut the weft and then stitched wig clips to either end of the weft using weave thread.

I have had my clip-ins since 2007 and have worn them regularly. They have held up well due to the quality of the hair. I have washed, blow dried and flat ironed them numerous times and always deep condition them during the wash process.

    I hope that helps.
