Wig Review: Introducing 'Uba' by 21 Tress

"I have been looking for a unit with a blunt heavy fringe (bang) like this for a very long time.  In my bone straight relaxer days I used to have a blunt fringe so when I saw this unit on YouTube courtessy of Fabulasityisme, I jumped on it quick-time!"

Now, lets start off by saying that she looks stunning in every single unit she wears, but I thought I could rock this bad-boy unit too!  It was Black Friday weekend and I managed to purchase not one, but two wigs showcased on her channel.

Introducing: 'Drew' by BeShe

"I have been lemming this unit for about a year, possibly longer!   I am really pleased to be able to finally review my very own BeShe Drew unit!"

The picture above was taken last week and Drew and I have become very well acquainted with one another.  She is very easy to wear and I love the way she has the ability to instantly transform a look and an outfit.

Wash Day Diary: 09.12.13 @ 20 Weeks Post

"So, wash day was supposed to be on Sunday 8th, but true to form - I really didn't feel like doing it, I just wanted to relax!!!  This probably sounds very lazy but I have learnt the hard way in the past to not mess with my hair when I'm not feeling it or if I'm tired - OR BOTH!"

Since using the prescribed 'Wonder Shampoo' on my last wash day, my hair has felt great!  It's really moisturised and soft so I fgured I would follow pretty much the same steps and [GASP] use the exact same products in a row for a change.

These are the steps I folowed:

Product Haul: Black Friday '13 Bee Mine Haul

"A few months ago a reader mentioned that British Curlies were no longer stocking Bee Mine products!!!!"

A few weeks later another reader named Champayne (thanks girl!!!) mentioned stocking up on staples during Black Friday so this is exactly what I did and I purchased my favourite products.

Wash Day Diary: 22.11.13 @ 18 Weeks Post

"My wash days seem to be coming thick and fast... I seem to have fallen comfortably into a 10(ish) day wash day cycle.  At the moment, anything between 10-14 days seems best for me and my hair."

True to form, I decided that I wanted to try out yet another new product, but this time it wasn't some hard to find magical product, nope it was something I always have in my kitchen cupboards - good old sunflower oil!  Yep, I'm talking Flora and it appears my hair LOVED IT!

The picture above shows what my hair looked like at the start of my wash day.  I have been wearing these 10 twists underneath my wig units during the week.  My hair has felt soft and moisturised all week and I have been applying a mix of castor oil and Taliah Waajid Hair mist bodifier to my scalp every other day.

These are the steps I followed for this wash day:

Craving the White Stuff

So it may only seem like I have only just started by hair journey but its been 10 weeks since I last chemically relaxed my hair, this is the longest I have even gone without chemically relaxing the regrowth and I wont lie I am struggling! Although I haven't had as much breakage as I thought I might (I have had a little mainly at the very front) its been difficult on wash days as the two textures of my hair do not agree and take differently to products, for example the regrowth can take heavier oils like Olive Oil but it seems to make the ends sticky, stringy and thin looking. And if I use a lighter oil like Grape Seed I don't feel like the regrowth is getting enough moisture which may result in breakage! It all is just feeling a bit dry, brittle even.

My HAIR On My Mind: A New Look For My Old Look!

“After 5 fun months I have realised in the past couple of weeks that I am kinda over wearing cropped styles - for the time being.”

At the heart of this realisation is the fact that I just want to look like me again! I miss my hair.…. However, it’s not my HHJ hair that I miss, it is my old pre journey hair that I’m missing so I have decided that I need a new full lace wig. In fact, I need two new wigs, this time with the glueless cap construction!

Wash Day Diary: 10.11.13 @ 16 Weeks Post

"So this week I decided to wash my hair at around the 10 day stage, rather than waiting for 2-3 weeks.  I wanted to see if this resulted in less tangles caused by shed hair.  I'm not sure if it did the trick but my scalp feels great and my hair is really moisturised so that'll do for me - for now!"

I did this wash day on Sunday during the day because after the tangles I encountered on my previous wash day, I wanted to make sure that I had the most amount of time possible to tackle any issues if they arose.

These are the steps I followed:

Wash Day Diary: 29.10.13 @ 14 Weeks Post

"The title of this post is wash day diary, but it should be Traumatic Tangles at Ten ’Clock!"

As you can see from the date, this wash day took place almost two weeks ago but I couldn’t access the document to upload this post.

I started out this wash day not really wanting but needing to wash my hair. It had been 2½ weeks since my last wash day and my scalp was acting up – which was strange for me. I think that could be down to the all-day baggying treatment I had given my hair on the previous Saturday – should have washed it then but I thought I could stretch another week out of it.

Tension Dry Naturals

So I just did my first Hair Day Sunday and Co wash, I was so happy with the result that I decided to to try tension drying too to make the new growth more manageable for the week ahead.

Hair Day Sunday - Wash Day

Hair Day Sunday  - my new wash day, I have a little more time on Sunday's when The Mister is about and can give me a helping hand with the little lads.

I think my wash day routine will be to try these products, trial them for 6 weeks and review how I get on with them at the end and adjust where I feel appropriate.

I am not a products junkie like Tracey, my products are either Tracey's casts off of products which haven't worked for her but might for me, stuff on special offer or things I have been using for so long that I have forgotten why I use them in the first place!

Relaxer be GONE!

So as I mentioned in my intro my darling sister has let me loose on her blog...she's brave! I recently decided to attempt to grow the relaxer out of my hair and go back to my natural texture, to be honest I don't even know what my natural texture is even like anymore as I started relaxing my hair early in my teens and have relaxed my hair myself pretty much every 6 weeks since.

My hair isn't in a bad condition considering, its soft but can be very dry and sometimes brittle, I've wanted to grow the relaxer out for a few years now and even more so now as I have started to get more and more grey hairs (which I have renamed platinum blonde strands!) I didn't want to have to relax as well as colour.

Wash Day Diary @ 13 Weeks Post: 12.10.13

"Just over a week ago, I did my first wash day following my recent henna gloss treatment.  It went well and I must say, I am really enjoying this low maintenance no muss no fuss approach to my hair at the moment."

My wash day actually began two days beforehand but I got as far as unravelling one braid and decided that I wasn't up to the hours of dedication needed so I rebraided the section and watched TV with my boyfriend instead......

A Short Tale Of Ten Sections..........!

"It has become quite apparent to me that I will be keeping my hair in these ten sections for a while"

These little sections have become a familiar and constant part of my hair life for the past three weeks and in that time we have grown quite attached….

Henna Gloss 21.09.13

“At the weekend I finally got around to doing my long outstanding henna gloss treatment. I can’t say I was looking forward to it as the whole process takes entirely too long, but it is worth it so needs must and all that!”

I used my now tried and trusted recipe but tweaked it a little as I have some open boxes of auyedic powders that I want to use up. I started by brewing a mug of tea and in a separate bowl I soaked 2 x tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in some boiling water.

Update: Ouch, I’ve Become Even More Tender-headed!

“I’ve always been tender-headed and I was so happy when I learned how to braid my own hair as I can regulate the tension to suit how tender my head was at any one time.”

I remember back to the days when my mum used to braid my hair and I would complain the whole time about how much it was hurting me. I used to dread getting my hair done on a Sunday night. Over the years this improved but I was definitely at the high end of the tender scalp scale.

Update: Protein, Henna & Colour Treatments

“Even though I cut back on my hair care regimen a few months ago, I still carried on with some of my hair care treatments – in particular my protein treatments.”

I carried out a hard protein treatment a few days prior to 10th July. For the protein treatment I used Aphogee Two Step which is a product I haven’t used for about 2 years after suffering protein from a protein overload. I am not sure if it worked properly because the bottle was pretty old and I despite shaking the bejeeebers out of it, after rinsing the product out of my hair I realised that a significant amount of product had settled in the bottom on the bottle. I will do another Two Step treatment in about 4 weeks time.

Product Review: Aquatiere Refillable Shower Filter Head

"After my post I about needing a new shower filter head I thought it would be useful to come back and share with you my thoughts on my final choice of replacement."

I ended up purchasing the Chrome Shower Handle from the UK based company Aquatiere. After speaking to the sales representative (yes, I called them with a ton of questions!) it seemed like the best option and trust me I am so not disappointed with my choice.

Update: Shedding, Breakage & Hair Loss

"My hair still continues to shed!!!"

The picture above shows the hair shed during my last crochet braid take down which is very compacted.  I was going to add a series of photos to this post to show what I have to deal with every wash day but it's too depressing!

What I have done though is added a picture below of the hair shed on my most recent wash day on 03.09.13 at 6 weeks post relaxer and a couple from the past couple of years for comparison purposes.

Update: Bee Mine Growth Serum

"Over the past weeks/months I have been more consistent with the application of my growth serum."

I think this improvement  in consistency has a lot to do with discovering that I have a really dry scalp!!!  Also the fact that I don’t hate the smell of the Bee Mine growth serum really makes it less of a chore to apply it on a regular basis.

Update: Time To Reassess My Long Term Protective Styles

"Despite my huge love of long-term protective styles, I have decided to give them a complete swerve for probably the next 12 months."

I will still be heavily reliant on protective styles throughout the coming year but I plan to use a combination of wigs which I will use in rotation.

"Because I have been unwell, I kinda just got on with doing things to my hair as and when they needed to be done.....  If I happend to have a camera charged and didn't look too rough then I would take a few pictures to document the activity."

Unfortunately I was both looking and feeling not so fantastic on relaxer day, so I only took a few pictures prior to relaxing my hair.

I've been away again for quite sometime, around 3 months I think.  I've been very unwell with glandular fever which knocked me for six.  I'll be posting proper updates on what I've been doing with my hair and my plans going forward.

Bye Bye Crochet Braids - Until Next Time!!

"Bwoy, have I been ill for the past two weeks!  I took down my crochet braids at some point this week, but I can't even remember what day!"

I am thankfull that I had my crochet braids in as they take little to no work when it comes to maintaining them so I could be out of bed, showered and ready to go with the minimum of fuss, effort and time which over the past week has been essential.

Crochet Braids #7

"I installed my 7th set of crochet braids earlier this month at 5 weeks post relaxer.  I think this is my favourite install to date!!!"

I opted for braiding my hair with 12 braids going backwards and one horizontal braid at the nape. I didn't use any extension hair at the nape as for some reason my hands were not doing what my head was telling them to do.  My nape is now longer and stronger than  it was when I tried crochet braids for the first time last year, so I think it will be fine.

Henna Gloss Treatment @ 5 Weeks Post: 28.04.13

“I think after at least two years of henna treatments I have reached the holy grail of henna gloss mixtures for my hair and also found a rinsing process which works for me!”

1 x 100g box of henna powder
2 x large tablespoons of amla powder
1 x tablespoon of EVOO
2 x tablespoons of EVCO (melted into the EVOO)
1 x mug of warm strong black tea (made with 2 x bags and steeped for 30mins+)
2 x teaspoons of honey (melted in the warm tea)
Coconut milk solids from a 400ml can (approx. 3 x heaped tablespoons)
1 x tablespoon of coconut milk water (from the same 400ml can)
1 x tabledpoon of AVJ

I'm really loving this combination! A long time ago I used to coat my hair in oil before applying the henna gloss. Nowadays there is no need as I add all the oil I need to counteract the drying effect of henna and amla, directly into the mixture.

Not only is it simple to make but it’s also 100% natural which has gotta be a good thing!!! Also, as I don’t particularly care for the smell of henna this mixture, without the addition of a store brought conditioner, doesn’t bother me half as much. I also think the addition of coconut milk solids really soften and almost straighten my new growth so it’s a win win!

These are the steps I followed:

"What Are Your Thoughts On Going Natural?"

"I recently received a comment on one of my wash day posts regarding my shedding issues. Along with this was a question asking 'What are your thought on going natural?' "

Okay....okay, the picture above is is NOT how my hair would look if it were natural - but one can have dreams ....right?!  If my hair would look like this I would have been sporting natural hair a long time ago....!

Anyway, back to the original question which came through anonymously .  Along with wanting to know what my thoughts were on 'going natural', the commenter also stated that she 'would love know my reasons and thoughts!'.  So, I thought I would oblige.

Wash Day Diary @ 3 Weeks Post: 15.04.13

"After a busy Sunday afternoon I made the decision not to wash my hair that night as I was just too tired to consider doing it!"

I really want to ensure that I keep on top of my 12 week schedule and the application of my growth serum, so I didn't want to overshoot my wash day by too many days so I opted to do it on Monday night instead.

Update on My HAIR: Thickness & Length Check #5

"Following my recent relaxer day 24.03.13 I was pleasently surprised to realise that I had passed arm pit length (APL) on this healthy hair journey of mine!!!  I manged to leave my hair alone for a day before taking to it with my cabide scissors! My ends, in my opinion, were not so great so they just had to go!"

It wasn't a surprise to me as this trim was one that had been in the planning since the install of my straight crochet braids.

My HAIR On My Mind: 2013 HAIR Schedule

“Over the past 3 years of my HHJ I have struggled to incorporate and be consistent with my henna gloss treatments and growth aides. I have therefore taken a look at my regimen to see how I can schedule these in effectively.”

Over the past 12 weeks I have been trialling my schedule which I plan to use going forward for the next 12 months. The details of the schedule are as follows:

I Need A New Shower Filter Head

"After my previous shower head was viciously smashed into a million pieces in a fit of jealousy and rage, I now need to buy a replacement!!!"

Okay, okay......, that's not entirely a true reflection of what happened to my shower filter but in my mind that's how it has played out, so I'm going with to stick with that version for now.  Anyway, all jokes aside, no matter 'whatever' happened to my beloved filter - the fact remains that I now need to buy a new one.

The last shower filter handle I purchased was from Aquatiere   I opted for the Spring Shower Handle with Filter as I think it was the only model they had at the time.  Irrespective of the cracked front unit which housed the filter cartridge it lasted me for ages and I got great results for my hair i.e. more moisturised than ever before!!!  I used to use it for everything even when making spritz for my hair or filling up my Caruso Steam Hair Setter.

Growing My Nape

"Today I received a comment on the My HAIR section of my blog.  Initially I was going to write a whole rambling reply but thought I should save the rambling for a post.  Thanks for the comment MK !"

My nape has been such a challenge for me to grow and maintain and it still causes me trouble almost 3 years into my HHJ!!!

My nape is far from perfect but it has come along nicely since 2007-2009 when I experienced wide scale breakage and the hair literally wouldn't stay on my head!

I think the problems started when I fell in love with 'flowy' flat ironed poker straight hair and quite frankly, I just didn't moisturise my hair enough in an attempt to keep my hair from being weighed down and as a result, my nape suffered the brunt of my neglect.

I can definitely say that the following things contributed to my nape growing and being less prone breakage:

Crochet Braid Take Down - 09.03.13

"I started the take down process for my crochet braids on Saturday  afternoon.  I am always surprised at how much easier and quicker these are to take down than the kinky twists."

First things first, I made a point of reminding myself  of exactly how many weeks post relaxer I am - which is a few days shy of 11 weeks post!  I will not be making the same mistake as my last take down of kinky twists where I did pretty mych everything wrong!

Below are a few photos of the process.

My mums favorite grease to use on my hair was green Dax. I do recall on occasions that she also used Blue Magic but her favorite by far was Dax. I hated the smell of Dax and preferred Blue Magic but as my mum was doing my hair it was her rules that went!

What's Going On With Simply Into My HAIR...?

"You may have noticed that I have been M.I.A. from my blog pretty much throughout the whole duration of the month of February."

I apologise for being away for such a long time.  Intially my absence from the blog was due to having ZERO broadband connection for two whole weeks!!  Luckily, I still had my phone so was able to post updates on the Facebook page on my henna gloss treatment and sixth set of crotchet braids but blogging properly from the laptop just couldn't happen.

I thought I'd post a link to my 20.01.13 wash day incase you missed it in the flurry of posts this evening.  I wrote the wash day post back in January but never posted because the images were on my laptop - which I couldn't use to post!

Anyway, enough excuses....below are some of the other things that happened since I last posted way back in January.

Wash Day Diary @ 4 Weeks Post: 20.01.13

"Again, I have been sporting the rats/birds nest updo.  It's fast becoming a well rehearsed favourite of mine!!!"

When I bun I don't do anything to my hair other than moisturise and seal twice a day.  I take my bun down every evening when I get home from work, moisutrise, seal and then secure my bun loosely with one bobby pin.  Before bed I take out the pin, moisturise my ends again, seal and then cover with scarf with my hair still in the direction of my bun so it is flattened for the morning.  The following morning I moisturise and seal again, put my ponytail holder in for my bun in my position of choice then I'm out the door.  This process continues for the next 6 or 7 days until wash day comes around again.

At the end of week my hair along the perimeter and the back looks smooth but my denser hair at the ront and the top looks like it's ready for a breeding pair of pigeons to set up home!  This week I took the following steps to try and evict those flying rats!

Wash Day Diary @ 3 Weeks Post: 13.01.13

"I’ve not combed my hair since my last wash day. Yep, it was definitely starting to look a bit like a tangled birdsnest, but I just left it alone and continued bunning for the week with no harm done."

The lack of combing, finger combing and generally messing with my hair resulted in pretty much no shedding for the week, on the days I did shed, I only shed about 20 long strands (with the bulb attached) and had zero notable breakage. RESULT!!!

These are the steps I followed for this wash day.
