A Short Tale Of Ten Sections..........!

"It has become quite apparent to me that I will be keeping my hair in these ten sections for a while"

These little sections have become a familiar and constant part of my hair life for the past three weeks and in that time we have grown quite attached….

This is a picture of my hair at the end of my wash day this weekend. It is still twisted like this underneath 'Ira'.

The reasons for keeping my hair in these sections is not only because they make handling my hair at 13 weeks post with ample new growth much easier when it comes to detangling, but I also have a feeling that it ultimately reduces manipulation because I am not constantly parting and separating my fine fragile strands of hair when installing braids or twists when wearing my units.  The smaller sections also make it easier to wash my hair and to apply product to my hair and scalp effectively.

I detangle each side, starting at with section 1 shown in the diagram below and ending at section 5. I finger detangle before washing and then again with a comb after washing.

On wash days and for styling, section 1 is the front of my head, section 5 is the back.

Most importantly, keeping these ten sections also makes monitoring my shedding easier. I know that I shed more from one side of my head than the other. Each of the ten sections shed hair at differing rates, some sections on the left seem to be happily ticking away over there with their little follicle friends, whereas over on the right there appears to be some sort of a mutiny going on with follicles and strands parting ways en masse, without a care for their balding brethren below!!!

I have also gone back to using wash day clips and have found that my one pronged roller clips used during relaxer days and roller-setting (of all things!) work brilliantly at preventing my hair tangling up during the wash process.

I plan to relax my hair in the coming weeks as I’m now already one week over my 12 week schedule. I will be using the half and half method, but this time I will be using these 10 sections instead. I will relax sections 1,2 & 3 as one half then 4 & 5 as the second half and see how that works out.

As you can see, the numbering varies slightly between sections 1, 2 and 3 as when it comes to relaxer, these are swapped around because sections which are now 2 and 3 process quicker than section 1.

For relaxer days, section 2 is the front of my head, section 5 is the back.

  1. I use about that many sections if not more. When you have finer strands large sections don't seem to work. Great Post!

  2. How do you keep your twists from unraveling in the shower? That is always a problem for me

Before I would rarely venture into the territory of more than 8 sections. I'm finding that 10 work so much better. You're right, with fine strands the more sections the better :)

At the moment I yes clips like the ones in the photo of this post. So far they are working well at stopping the twists unraveling once water hits my hair ;)

I will add a link to my previous wash day clips in this post so you can see the other items I've tried in the past.

  5. I think I might try this out. I'm 13 (or 14 I can't remember at the moment) weeks post relaxer and if this helps with detangling, I'll be a happy camper.

    Hiya (",)

Well, detangling at the weekend was definitely less traumatic. I got through the sections in under an hour which is something of a rarity these days so I will put that down to the sections and securing the hair from twisting on itself during washing and rinsing.

I can't say that I lost much less hair but the tangles were definitely less intense. My main issue was with my new growth, rather than my tangled length of my hair and ends which was a welcome change. :)

  7. I normally do 4 or 5 sections, but I've never tried this many. I might have to try this next wash day since I've had a little trouble detangling lately. Thanks for sharing this idea!

Me too! 4 sections used to be my go to amount but I'm finding that this is working so much better for me as it's much easier to manage this way.

I'll probably stick with between two and four sections for the first four weeks following my relaxer then increase to ten again after that.

I'd love to know if it works out for you :)
