My New Kinky Twists - 11.05.12

"It's time for these again! I really love the crochet braids but I wanted something different to see me through the next 6 weeks."

I started the install the day after my henna gloss wash day and finished the following day.  I think the install took approximately 13hrs.

Here are a couple of pictures of the install and end result.

This is my hair after completing the first two rows.  It took just over an hour to reach this point.  I always find the back the hardest part to do as I can't see what I am doing so the twists tend be be a little less uniform in this area which really isn't a problem for me.

I managed to complete the install to this stage using just one bag of hair! I used about 10 more sections of hair from a second bag to complete the style.  The sections were cut in two and then split in two so each section yielded enough hair for 4 x kinky twists.

As you can see my hair is slightly longer than the marley braid hair when it has been cut in half and then halved again for installation.  I didn't want long kinky twists again so in order to install the hair without the ends of my hair protruding from the extension hair I pulled sections of hair from each end of the marley braid hair in order to make it about an inch longer prior to installation.  the second picture shows an example of where the ends of my hair reach in relation to the extension hair.  The ends of my hair reach almost an inch before the extension hair ends.

This is the install at the halfway mark.  The bronze coloured plastic sectioning clip is what I used to prevent the twist twisting around on itself at the root of my own hair which causes uncessary tension.  The clip is quite chunky and has small teeth which grip the hair but without causing snagging or damage.

This is what the twists look like in a loose high bun.  I only kept the hair like this for a few minutes whilst taking the picutres for the blog and then I let the hair down straight away.

This is how my hair looked directly after finishing the install.

I usually wear my hair either in a loose pony tail or just down during the day.  I wear it like this every night and cover with my satin scarf.  Once the twists are a week old I will start wearing them up in a high bun and in other styles but I will let them settle in first so I don't put any additional strain on my edges.

I need to fix the line of twists along the right hand side of the centre parting because the spacing between the twists is off and I have 2 twists less than on the left hand side.  I will do that sometime this week.

Close up of the area I need to fix at some point to even up the spacing and number of twists at the top.

I really love how these twists came out!  They are longer than the first install because my hair has grown since then but I really do like them.

I used the same brand as hair as in my first install but this time around I used colour 1b/33.  This install took longer than expected because I had a fun old time separating the marley braid hair and also having to elongate each section before installing all took extra time. I soaked the hair in a vinegar and water solution for about 45mins and I think this has helped with regards to the itchies, although I am still experiecing some irritation but I think this is due to the rough texture of the hair.  Removing the alkaline base from the hair using the vinegar soak make the hair hair a little dryer and harder to separate so next time I will add a further step of adding some conditioner soak to the hair to make it more pliable.

  1. omgoodness, they look soo nice! Great job! I have kinky twists on my list of styles to do!
Great tip about the conditioner after the vingegar rinse. I never had issues with hardness, but I also haven't done the rinse on kinky marley hair either.

  2. Hey Tama, quick question: Do you braid first then twist through-out your whole head? Also, do you have any issues with ends sticking out the twists? I assume u just twist your real hair into the marley hair, right?
I only did 2 sets of kinky twists, but on other peoples hair. So any pointers would be great!

  3. I WISH I could braid my own hair like that. I'm actually going to put in some crochet braids today which I used to help my mom do on my sister's hair as a kid. Much easier for me.

    Awww, thanks Ms D!

Thanks also for the tip regarding the acv rinse for the hair - it has helped loads! I can feel a big difference. I think adding a huge squirt of conditioner to the water will soften the hair up and also make it easier to split the hair which is always a bit of a chore with the brand of hair that I use.

    Hiya

Yes, I connect the extension hair by wrapping the marley braid hair around my own hair so I have 3 pieces (2 x marley braid hair and 1 x my own hair. I braid about an inch down first and then I incorporate my hair into one of the strands of marley braid hair before I begin twisting the hair, firstly on itself and then around the other strand of marley braid hair (the same double twisting technique used for Senegalese twists). I twist from that point through to the end of the extenstion hair, which fully incorporates my own hair. Some people braid and then split their own hair between the two strands of marley braid hair but I feel that my hair is better protected when left intact and added to just one strand, although the twists are probably neater with the other method. I've never had any problems with the ends sticking out of the twists doing it this way.

I can't wait to see what yours turn out like - and your crochet braids too!!

A year ago I couldn't braid my own hair at all!! I watched loads of YouTube videos and taught myself how to do it and have also learned how to cornrow which have come in useful for crochet braids!

  8. You did a great. I wish I could braid my own hair. I will definitely keep this post to see if I can do my daughter's hair like this for the summer. My daughter's hair is about APL, do you think longer lengths and swimming will stay neat?

    Awwww, thanks!

I would think it should stay pretty neat - well as neat as braids (with extensions) would if they are being wet and washed regularly. I don't think the length would be an issue. I reckon your daughter will look lovely in them.

  10. Your twists look fabulous! How did you finish the ends? I am planning to get long kinky twists however I would prefer not to have the ends fodder.

    Hiya

I didn't do anything to finish the ends, I just twist through to the very ends of the extension hair.

  13. I just did my first install, too, and I love it! I added a cheap, oily hair cream to mine as I twisted and that softened the hair, added shine and softened my own hair.

Congratulations on your first install. It's a great achievement being able to braid your own hair in extensions! I'm so glad I finally learned how to do it.

Adding the cream as you go along the twist really does help with keeping your hair soft whilst twisting and also keeps the twist looking smooth (prevents fly-aways!).

  15. It works best to do the vinegar rinse after the install.

  16. hello i'd liek to know how to fix my flyaways without taking my braids out. i just got them done 3 days ago and my hair is a finer texture and my ends are coming out of my twist? :-(

Thanks, I'll consider that if I ever forget to soak prior to installation. :)

    Hi

To be honest I'm not really sure what to suggest. Maybe you could put gel on the flyaways if it's where the ends if your lay.

I'm sorry that's probably not much help. I don't usually worry so much about flyaways or smooth edges around my hairline (I'm strange like that I suppose!). If I need to neaten up my twists I just deinstall and reinstall one braid/twist at a time.

I really hope you find a solution that works for you.

  19. about ends sticking out. when that happens to me it's because: i sectioned off too big a piece of my hair; or used too much of the marley so the twists aren't as tight; or depends on the brand of hair used (some twist tighter than others -- the really kinky hair holds the ends better).
